It can be so hard not to wear black – especially in the winter. It’s easy to layer, simple to match with and can give off a different vibe, depending on what you’re trying to go for.
But sometimes, you might get tired of wearing the same black shirt, black leggings, and black hoodie. We know it’s comfortable, but if you’re trying to look more put together with not-too-much effort, here’s how you can do it.
A Pop Of Color Goes A Long Way
Some people might think that to have a “good outfit,” you have to match: your yellow shirt must match with your slightly yellow pants and loudly bright yellow heels with your muted yellow Polo Ralph Lauren handbag.
But that’s not true. And it’s especially not true if you’re wearing black.
You can base your outfit from one color; for the sake of this post, let’s say black. Maxi skirts are perfect in the winter because you can keep your legs warm – and even wear tights or leggings underneath for extra warmth – and still look stylish. To contrast the long black, flowy maxi skirt, try adding a drawstring top that has a hint of color. Top off the look with white platform boots.
Sticking to the theme, you can start off another outfit with a black and white sweater. The pop of color is already there, so now you can add a black, stretchy maxi skirt that has front pockets – because who doesn’t love pockets… especially on skirts? You can give your look a little more edge by wearing some chunky lace up boots.
But you don’t always have to center your outfits around the top, skirt, or even the shoes – sometimes it’s the socks that pull the outfit together. Try a color-block top with a midi flare skirt to add some flavor and show you’re not strict to just maxi skirts. Now pull out some chunky loafers, but make sure to pull out some white socks – ones that come up right above the ankle.
Turtlenecks Are Your Best Friend
Have you ever found a dress that you loved but thought you couldn’t wear it because it’s 20 degrees outside? We have one word for you: turtlenecks.
The next time you go out for brunch, try wearing a black cami slip maxi dress over a turtleneck and add some platform boots. If you want to add that pop of color, you can wear a white turtleneck underneath, or even try a lime green one.
This outfit can be either one for a nicer occasion or more casual occasion, depending on which one you’re trying to go for.
A black apron jumper and turtleneck combo is very common, but that’s just because it works. You can give this fit a more edgy look by throwing on platform lace boots, or you can go casual with some sneakers.
Mixing Textures Are OK!
Don’t be afraid of experimenting. That’s how you find your own style and see what works and what doesn’t work for you.
Sheer black overlay tops are effortless, trendy picks. Try a floral black top with a slim skirt; the lightweight a-line will hug your body and give you a sleek look while the sheer black overlay gives you some contrast. Platform boots are almost always a go-to shoe for the winter.
Now, if you want the focus to be on your bottom half, choose a black and white skirt. Next, you can put on a textured fitted top that’s sure to keep you extra warm in the cold weather.
Layering Is A Winter Essential
The best part about winter is that its cold temperatures force you to bundle up, so why not take advantage of it by layering?
One of the best pieces of clothing to layer with is a rib knit cropped top sweater. Pairing it with a black lined skirt already gives you the trendy look, but you might notice some of your skin is getting exposed. If that happens, you can always add a fitted shirt or tank top underneath or – if you have it laying around – put your black vest to use. Top off the fit with some white sneakers.
But now let’s put that black vest to use. Choose a mock neck knit sweater and put that black vest – with or without buttons – over it. Throw on a rib maxi skirt to give you some shape. Now, to spice it up, pull out a pair of strappy flatform sandals and, if you’re not trying to be cold, you can wear some wool ribbed crew socks.
One Last Thing - Accessories
And if you’re thinking about accessories… gold or diamond jewelry always stands out with black.
